pricked...

I finally made it to the Museum of Arts and Design yesterday. Thank goodness they extended "Pricked: Extreme Embroidery" till April 27th. I am very glad that I got to see it however brief the visit. My two little companions basically ran through the exhibit, they were more interested in climbing the stairs and talking about meeting daddy for lunch than actually looking at the art. Although I did manage to stop them a few times to look for embroidered butterflies or count bunnies...

No photography was allowed at the museum, but I bought the catalogue and took a few pictures of the pages of the art that spoke to me to share here.
Inez Zust-Gericke embroiders on strips of industrial gauze, amazingly sheer and delicate effect. Unfortunately I could find no other images of her work on the internet... I would have loved to see more. Ke-Sook Lee embroiders and paints images on antique handkerchiefs. Her work was an installation of the handkerchiefs suspended from clotheslines over the huge staircase. It looked very fairy tale like lightly moving in the breeze and filtering sunlight. The stories behind the work are very emotional too. Shizuko Kimura does the most amazing thread drawings of the human figure. She works directly from a live model. I was astonished by the loose sketchy delicacy of her work... Paul Villinski's work spoke to me through it's whimsy and recycling. These wings were constructed from found gloves and an empty backpack frame. Very impressive in person, almost at 12 feet wide these wings even stopped my girls...

Overall I thought the exhibit was wonderful and it was inspiring to see so much of art similar to what I do presented in a museum in NYC.. and motivating too...

I just read about this exhibit in Fiberarts magazine. It looks great. I wish I could see it in person.

Thanks for sharing this. These are amazing examples. The show title is very funny. Can mean so many things. Yes, I see your work in the next exhibit.

I esp love the handkerchiefs. I have stacks of old handkerchiefs and in fact my mom uses some that were my Grams.
